Slovenia is full of marvelous spots, where one can’t find boredom, where families can be active and where one can always think of an interesting way of spending their free time. It is a safe, friendly and welcoming country. Families can enjoy and explore the areas in a relaxed way and take in all the pristine spots it has to offer. Family adventure is above all a combination of an active research and true experience. Research is good, since this country is full of unusual traditions. To have a pristine family experience is what an escape from everyday parenting and worries is all about. A visitor has a chance to take in a large dose of different and interesting, natural and real.
As a parent of two seven and five-year-olds, I know what a walk through the Pokljuka woods in the Triglav National Park means to them. It is simply one giant, majestic research and observation, taking in nature and feeling truly a part of it. Every once in awhile we put on our harnesses and climb challenging rocky walls at well-known Slovenian climbing spots. Kids enjoy the unspoiled nature, learn to move in the vertical, play, swing on the ropes and yes, sometimes just play with the sticks and stones.. the way we and generations before us used to do. They feel the power of their imagination and the power of nature.
We cycle a lot, mostly on well maintained biking paths, like the one which takes us from Bohinjska Bistrica all the way to Lake Bohinj and back or on the former railway route, now a great asphalt biking path, from Mojstrana to Kranjska Gora. We also explore numerous gravel paths, stopping at small villages, lakes or other points of interest along the way.
In summer months, we set out on short hikes, mostly in the Julian Alps and the Karawanks, which are excellent for family wanderings. One can find well marked, pleasant and easy walking paths everywhere in Slovenia. The tour is usually planned in such a way, so that it leads us to a mountain or pasture hut, where kids truly take in mountain specifics and usually also get into contact with grazing livestock. My kids and yes, us parents as well, have the best time when we go camping by the Soca river and explore the stony banks of this emerald mountain gem, it always recharges our spirits and minds. We descend down the calmer part of the river on a mini raft, throw stones, build stone sculptures, climb on boulders and again and again discover new details of smaller and crystal clear tributaries of the flowing emerald beauty.
Slovenia is one of the best choices for an active family getaway. Saying from my own experience, since I have traveled in many countries, that this little land is one of the most appropriate playgrounds for gaining adolescent experiences, re-energizing parent’s batteries and for enjoying the natural environment with excellent local culinary. Whoever tastes true green Slovenia, will for sure return and escape back to nature’s basics, to the things that truly matter. Away from the touch screen life to touching true nature.
