Mountains have always attracted people

We usually like to introduce ourselves as the ones who share the sky with birds and mountains with bouncy chamois – the fearless mountain goats. Mountains have always attracted people, who wished to conquer them, to reach their tops. Steep mountain walls attracted them even more, but for a long time they were only accessible to experienced mountaineers. The situation is much different nowadays. Safe climbing routes run across many steep and exposed walls with safe climbing routes – the so called “via ferrata routes”, which are accessible to a wider range of mountaineering enthusiasts.

The Julian Alps are a remarkable mountain range, the largest one in Slovenia and with the highest mountains. Across numerous walls run older classic via-ferrata routes, which lead to the top of the mountains and are as such a reflection of history and proof of mountaineering conquests. For these type of classics, one has to make a full day mountaineering tour, with a longer access and descend. Many modern via-ferrata routes were made at the edge of the Julian Alps in previous years. They were more easily accessible, better equipped, at certain areas more steep and ran across smooth walls. Such via-ferrata routes are appropriate for a wider range of vertical movement enthusiasts and for those with a desire for a certain dose of good quality adrenaline.

The past three decades, I’ve climbed almost all classic via ferratas high in the Julian Alps that are worth visiting and I’ve also become acquainted with all modern via-ferrata routes, that emerged in the latest period. In all honesty, speaking from my own experience; an ascend on a classic via-ferrata highlights the grandness of Alpine mountaineering, although it is shorter, better equipped, more upright and requires more climbing. Such routes are most definitely worth a visit for the experience they give to a mountaineer. It is a unique exploration of the natural environment and a climbing movement.

Slovenia is a great destination for climbing and mountaineering experiences and especially for a real via-ferrata adventure. One doesn’t need much to venture out from an urban environment into pure nature, all the way to the upright rocky walls and climb over the wall on a safe and secured via-ferrata route. For sure an experience that remains in your mind and soul for some time.
